Dr. Emily G. Makaš
biography

Dr. Emily G. Makaš, Associate Director and Associate Professor at the School of Architecture at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. She has a Ph.D in the History of Architecture and Urbanism from Cornell University and a Masters in Historic Preservation from Columbia University. Makaš’s research focuses on connections between memory, identity, and the built environment, including relationships between historic sites, commemorative spaces, museums, and communities. Her recent work explores relationships between urban history and identities in Sarajevo and Mostar. She is completing a monograph on commemoration, heritage reconstruction, and public space in Bosnia-Hercegovina titled Urban and National Identities and the Rebuilding of Mostar (forthcoming from Routledge). She is also currently editing the volume Planning Eastern European Capital Cities, 1945-1989 (forthcoming from Routledge). Makaš co-edited the volume Capital Cities in the Aftermath of Empires: Planning in Central and Southeastern Europe (Routledge, 2010) and co-authored Architectural Conservation in Europe and the Americas (Wiley, 2011). Her community-engaged research explores race and identity in the United States, including leading the curatorial teams for the “Legacy of Lynching” exhibition at the Levine Museum (Charlotte, NC 2019) and the “Container/Contained: Phil Freelon: Design Strategies for Telling African American Stories” exhibition at the Gantt Center (Charlotte, NC 2021) and the North Carolina Museum of Art (Raleigh, NC 2022).

 

Vladimir Kulić
biography

Vladimir Kulić is an architectural historian and curator. He has written extensively on architecture in socialist Yugoslavia and the former socialist world, and he co-curated the exhibition Toward a Concrete Utopia: Architecture in Yugoslavia, 1948-1980 at the Museum of Modern Art in New York (2018- 2019). Vladimir’s books include Bogdanović by Bogdanović: Yugoslav Memorials through the Eyes of Their Architect (2018), Bogdan Bogdanović Biblioteka Beograd (with Jelica Jovanović and Wolfgang Thaler, 2019), Second World Postmodernisms: Architecture and Society Under Late Socialism (2019), and Modernism In-Between: The Mediatory Architectures of Socialist Yugoslavia (with Maroje Mrduljaš and Wolfgang Thaler, 2012).

Dr. Aleksandar Staničić
biography

Dr. Aleksandar Staničić is an architect and assistant professor at TU Delft Faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment. Previously he was Marie Curie Postdoctoral Fellow at TU Delft (2018-2020), postdoctoral fellow at the Aga Khan Program for Islamic Architecture at MIT (2017-2018), and research scholar at the Italian Academy for Advanced Studies, Columbia University (2016-2017). His most recent work includes edited volume War Diaries: Design After the Destruction of Art and Architecture (University of Virginia Press, 2022), and numerous research articles in The Journal of Architecture, Footprint, Architecture and Culture, and others.
